Once you decide to start your side hustle, you may be immersing yourself in books, online resources, and podcasts. I LOVE PODCASTS. It’s a staple for me on my daily commute to and from my kids’ school. In fact, I’ve almost completely given up listening to music in favor of podcasts!

A close second for me are audiobooks. They don’t give you the instant gratification of starting and finishing an entire episode on your commute because they’re longer form, but it’s a convenient way to “read” books.

If you’re starting out on your side hustle journey (or on any part of your side hustle journey), these five audiobooks are essential reading. They’ve each got important lessons for you—either tactical, inspirational, or foundational.

Here they are (in no particular order):

“You Are A Badass” by Jen Sincero

It must have been an aversion to the title, because quite honestly, I didn’t think I’d like this book. I got it on Audible because I was 5 credits ahead and Audible told me I had to spend my credits or lose it. It had pretty good reviews, so I purchased it, and it sat in my library for a while.

Let’s just say that Jen is a riot— I ended up loving this book so much that I bought the physical copy and her follow up book. She’s super funny, and she makes stuff that a lot of us would deem too “woo-woo” accessible and relatable.

This book is a must for any working mom starting their side hustle, because you’re going to need inspiration and someone to believe in you as you go on your side hustle journey. If you have a mental block about personal development (you think it’s cheesy and dumb), try this audio book. You may find yourself laughing—-and then buying in.

“Building A Story Brand” by Donald Miller

Building your own personal brand is not easy, but it’s something everyone should be doing. This is a great book narrated by the author that helps you break down your message so that customers will understand who you are and what you’re offering.

This book teaches you to write your copy with the customer as the hero in the story you relay in your messaging. Needless to say, the insight into how best to write your copy is essential if you want to build a successful side biz.

Donald Miller also has a great podcast, and if you’re like me, you don’t like it when the podcast comes to an end. In this case, you have almost a 5 hour long podcast to get your marketing fix!

“Crushing It” by Gary Vaynerchuk

If you’re starting an online business, you need to know Gary Vee. Gary Vee started off in the online space many years ago when he put his family’s wine shop online and grew it exponentially.

This book dissects each of the major social media platforms and tells you how to “crush it”. Some of his advice is not realistic for working moms (for example, he tells his readers to spend 10+ hours a day, 7 days a week doing outreach), but the book is still useful. Since social media is an integral part of our daily lives, this book is essential. I like the real life examples he talks about and in addition, and he’s to the point and no nonsense.

Since I’m an outlier who doesn’t really like Facebook (I have an account but I’m not active on it), this book gave me valuable insight on how to use it for my biz. I listened to the entire book (8 hours each time) twice in a row! It may be useful to you as well—you can learn a bunch about the channels you might be less familiar with.

“7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Steven R. Covey

This book made it onto my short list of best resources for the working mom side hustler. However, I will admit it’s not the easiest book to get through (both the physical book and the audio book—I have both).

That being said, this is one of the most valuable books you can have in your arsenal. Habit #3 is the basis for the time management system that I teach in my Training and Challenge (to find the time to do the important things in your life).

The revelation here is that you are in control of your own life and destiny. It’s powerful to realize that you have the power to choose your response to the things that happen to you. If you take these lessons to heart, you can change your world. The lessons in personal effectiveness will be instrumental to you as you embark on your side hustle journey.

“Psycho-Cybernetics” by Maxwell Maltz M.D.

Here’s what Tony Robbins had to say about this book, ““Before the mind can work efficiently, we must develop our perception of the outcomes we expect to reach. Maxwell Maltz calls this Psycho-Cybernetics; when the mind has a defined target it can focus and direct and refocus and redirect until it reaches its intended goal.”

This is a powerful book that teaches you the importance of believing that you’re the kind of person that can achieve great things—which will be critical as you face down the demons of self-doubt and fear as you build your side hustle (because they will inevitably arise at some point!).

And there you have it. Happy listening! If you found this post helpful, please share it with a fellow working mom side hustler or pin it to your Pinterest boards! Aloha!
